Teaming up with Tiffany Ford last Saturday in a test-drive fundraiser, the Baler Backers Athletic Organization managed to raise between $2,700 and $2,800 for San Benito High School athletics, according to Baler Backers Secretary Kelly Sepulveda.

Organizers were hoping for a better turnout to the event, where Tiffany Ford was donating $20 to the Baler Backers for each test drive taken by the public.

There was a set maximum of 300 test drives to be allowed — meaning the Baler Backers could have raised, at most, $6,000 — but only 135 to 140 people were in attendance on Saturday at the parking lot of Andy Hardin Stadium.

“It’s more than $2,500 that wasn’t there last week,” Sepulveda said. “So that’s awesome.

“We’ll keep on going.”

The Balers Backers is trying to raise money for SBHS athletics, which is undergoing a $100,000 budget shortfall. If the athletic department cannot raise the funds, freshmen sports are expected to be cut from next year’s program.

Sepulveda said the non-profit organization’s next fundraiser will come during the winter sports season.

Meanwhile, the San Benito Stage Company is teaming up with Haybaler athletics on Oct. 29-31 and Nov. 5-6. Mention “Haybaler athletics” or “Baler Backers” at the time of the ticket purchase and San Benito Stage Company will donate $2 per ticket.

Show time is 7 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays at the Granada Theater, located on Fifth Street in Hollister.

Sunday, Oct. 31, is the special Halloween event at 2:30 p.m. Those in costume will receive a treat.

Advance tickets can be purchased at Running Rooster or Postal Graphics.

Local gymnastics team continues climb to the top

USA Sports, with a team comprised of gymnasts from Hollister and Gilroy, continued to have personal-best performances at the recent Emerald City Invitational 2010, hosted by Twister Sports of Mountain View.

Hollister 15-year-old Taylor Lawrence’s string of dominating performances this season in the Level 6 Senior competition continued with a first place finish on the uneven bars (8.675), second in the all-around (35.50) and third on vault (9.125). Already this season, she has won two all-around titles, and gold on floor exercise, vault and uneven bars.

“Taylor is positioning herself to do very well at the Zone Meet,” USA Sports Coach Melinda Lawrence said in a statement. “But the other gymnasts are also stepping up their game. They’ve really cleaned up the little things and performing at their ability level.”

Level 5 and 6 gymnasts must qualify for the state competition through the NorCal Zone Championships in November.

The club’s Level 5 gymnast Aubrey Kaho, of Gilroy, achieved a personal-best. She scored a 34.45 in the all-around, which not only placed her fourth but also qualified her for the NorCal Zone Championships. Also in the Level 5 division, Catharina Ji, of Hollister, finished third on balance beam (9.05).

USA Sports’ Level 4 team had some of their best performances of the season with a fourth place team title (101.72). But individually, they were even more impressive.

Gilroy’s Sloane Pace lead the team with two pairs. She finished second in the all-around (35.85) and vault (9.05) and third on balance beam (9.25) and floor exercise (9.20). Teammate Sonte Stewart, also of Gilroy, placed third on vault (8.825).

Cardinals announce all-stars, captains

Although each member team of the San Benito Cardinals fell short of reaching the postseason, four players from the Pee Wee division were named to the NorCal AYF All-Star Game.

Linebacker Zach Alnas, halfback Kevin Casillas, defensive end Raul De La Cruz and linebacker Jamie Garcia will suit up for the West All-Stars on Nov. 21 at Rio Linda High School in Sacramento, the home site of the East All-Stars.

The Cardinals also announced their year-end team captains, who were selected for outstanding play at practice and in games. They included Offensive Captain Sean Mills, Defensive Captain Will Lanning, Special Teams Captain Alex Ruiz and Head Captain Christian Orazco.

Committee seeks funds for Anzar football program

In an effort to field a football team by fall 2011, as well as remain cost neutral to the Aromas-San Juan Unified School District, a new fundraising committee at Anzar High School is seeking approximately $25,000 for initial start-up costs by December of this year.

The Football Fundraising Committee is focusing on community members and local businesses to make pledges to a football program at Anzar, which would be a first for the San Juan Bautista high school.

The initial $25,000 price tag would help pay for uniforms, helmets and other equipment for the team, as well as help pay for coaches stipends, referees and league dues.

Anzar already boasts a football field, equipped with goal posts and an electronic scoreboard, thanks to the San Benito Cardinals of American Youth Football and Cheer.

If you would like to donate, all pledges, in any amount, can be sent to:

Anzar Football Fundraising Committee

2300 San Juan Highway

San Juan Bautista, Calif., 95045

Note:

Donor should provide name, address and phone number and amount of his/her pledge. Pledges will be collected after Jan. 1, 2011.

Hollister Volleyball Club to hold tryouts on Nov. 6

The Hollister Volleyball Club is scheduled to commence its inaugural season Nov. 6 with tryouts for girls ages 12U to 17U.

“HVC welcomes all girls who want to grow not only as a player, but as an individual,” said Kellie Kennedy, spokesperson for the club. “Players will learn both the fundamentals of the game as well as the mental aspects.”

All teams will compete in an area league, which includes a series of six tournaments: a single-day regional qualifier with a minimum of four matches; four single-day league tournaments; and an end-of-season, two-day regional championship. Teams will also compete in up to four specialty tournaments, which will be located throughout the Bay Area and Reno, Nev.

“Not ever playing club ball before is not a reason to not tryout, it is a reason to try,” Kennedy said. “Taking that chance and becoming part of a team that strives for a common goal is something that no girl should pass up.”

All tryouts will be held at Anzar High School, located in San Juan Bautista. Girls age 11 to 14 will tryout from 1 to 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 6, and 9 to 11:30 a.m. on Sunday. Girls age 15 to 17 will tryout from 4 to 6:30 p.m. on Saturday and will continue Sunday from 12 to 2:30 p.m.

The cost is $15 and all girls will receive a Hollister Volleyball Club T-shirt.
