Independents Week honors local shop owners
The American Independent Business Alliance and the Hollister Downtown Association declare the week of July 11-17 Independents Week.
“It’s a time to reflect on the important of economic democracy and community self-determination by celebrating the nation’s locally owned independent businesses and the stake each citizen has in shaping their home town’s future,” said Jennifer Rockne, the director of AMIBA.
HDA Executive Director Brenda Weatherly added:
“The HDA is joining other local alliances and partner organizations nationwide – thousands of independent business owners and citizens who are participating in Independents Week – to celebrate our great independent businesses who exemplify the uniqueness of Hollister. We have reason to celebrate – these friends and neighbors embody the spirit of entrepreneurism and individuality in our community. Our citizens are integral to ensuring we keep these businesses that help define who we are and contribute to our sense of place.”
Community residents may celebrate Independents Week by participating in a variety of activities, including a scavenger hunt in Downtown Hollister.
Find 20 items sold by independent businesses and enter a drawing for a chance to win $200.
Residents may also take a pledge to shop 100 percent locally for the week of July 1-7, a challenge that can easily be met with a little planning.
A game card and complete details of all activities are available on the HDA’s website at www.downtownhollister.org.
“National Independents Week is a wonderful time to recognize the key role playing by independent businesses in Downtown Hollister,” said Liz Smith, the president of the HDA.
To kick off the week, Mayor Victor Gomez will proclaim Independents Week publicly at a city council meeting June 21.
