The following events, organizations and people deserve either a
Thumbs Up or Thumbs Down this week.
THUMBS UP: For the 59 graduates of Anzar High School who received their diplomas earlier this week. Members of the Anzar Class of 2005 achieved a significant milestone Tuesday when they crossed the stage, and they should be proud of their accomplishments. Make the most of the excellent education you received at tight-knit Anzar High. And whatever you choose to do with your life, pursue it with passion and you will be sure to succeed.

THUMBS UP: For San Benito County Supervisors who are having informal discussions about updating the county’s antiquated General Plan. The plan is San Benito County’s blueprint for growth, development and transportation and it has never had a comprehensive revision. In fact, portions of it have not been changed since the 1980s. While it is wise to wait for the new county administrative officer to be in place before beginning the project, we hope the board acts boldly to make the significant changes once she is. It will take more than a patch job to ensure the document deals with the pressures and challenges facing the county today.

THUMBS UP: For the staff at Hazel Hawkins Hospital who found time to make romance blossom last weekend. When Josh Fluent checked in with pneumonia one day before his wedding, the hospital went out of its way to make sure the nuptials would go on. A first in Hazel Hawkins’ history, Fluent and his bride, Michelle Allee, were married on the hospital lawn on Sunday. The hospital’s staff was very generous to pitch in and make this special day happen for the new couple. Well done.

THUMBS DOWN: For the news that the star-crossed tracks on Highway 25 that already are starting to deteriorate – you know, the ones that used to cause a long line of traffic to back up before they were fixed in April. This time, a panel between the tracks is starting to crumble. We hope Union Pacific and Caltrans will move quickly to repair the damage before we have another hazard that leads to more traffic jams on 25.
