The following people, events and organizations deserve either a
Thumbs Up or Thumbs Down this week
THUMBS UP: For the passage of Measure L, the $31.5 million bond measure that will lead to a much-needed expansion of Hazel Hawkins Hospital. The hospital was built in the 1960s when the community was drastically smaller. This bond will help Hazel Hawkins keep up with the needs of our growing town and deliver the health care we deserve.

THUMBS UP: For the San Benito County Supervisors who have reversed course on the debate about creating an the ethics commission to monitor campaigns. Supervisors will take another look at establishing some sort of group to be a watchdog over local campaigns – something that, unfortunately, is much needed. It’s good to see that the supervisors, who got a load of criticism over last week’s decision to kill the ethics committee, are responsive to those they represent.

THUMBS UP: For the return of the downtown Farmers Market. It’s a pleasant sign of the season and a great way to get people into our historic downtown. And, it’s a good way to support our local farmers and enjoy the bounty our county has to offer. Make sure to stop by the market on the corner of Fourth and San Benito streets on Wednesdays between 3-7pm.

THUMBS DOWN: For the low voter turnout in the Measure L election. While we’re glad the bond measure won, it’s disappointing that only 37 percent of the county’s registered voters actually cast a ballot. It goes to show that something must be done to get more people involved in our democracy. At this point, we must try new ideas to get people to vote whether that be through recent proposals such as an all-mail ballot or a weekend election.
