On Wednesday, California Patrol Highway officers statewide will be focusing their attention on people who don’t buckle up when riding in a vehicle, according to a press release from the agency.

May 21 has been designated as a “Vehicle Occupant Safety Awareness and Education Day,” which coincides with the Statewide “Click It or Ticket” mobilization from May 12 through June 2.

The officers who will be on grant-funded overtime will specifically take the road looking for violations of seat belt and child safety restraints. According to the Office of Traffic Safety, seat belt usage by California motorists is a record high at 94.6 percent. The CHP wants to raise that number higher, according to the press release.
