Being responsible is the key to a safe New Year’s Eve on California’s highways, according to the California Highway Patrol.
“Decide who’ll be driving before you attend that holiday party. Then see to it that the designated driver abstains from alcohol entirely,” said Capt. Bob Davies, commander of the CHP’s Hollister-Gilroy Unit.
“Just one or two drinks can put you at risk and impair your ability to drive safely,” Davies said. “We encourage everyone to plan ahead. If you’re going out with a group, make sure you designate a driver. Those who are hosting events in their home should provide their guests with a variety of non-alcoholic beverages.”
To combat drunk driving, the CHP has declared the New Year’s holiday a maximum enforcement period. All available officers will be on the road to prevent deaths and injuries from Tuesday, Dec. 31 at 6 p.m. to midnight Jan. 1, Davies said.
The CHP will also be looking for drivers who fail to buckle their seat belts or do not have passengers or children properly restrained.
“Safety belts are the best protection available should a collision occur. They save lives,” Davies said.
