On March 21, the Council of San Benito County Governments and Ecology Action partnered to provide students with a day of bicycle safety education.
Ecology Action hosted a Youth Bike Safety Training presentation at San Juan Elementary School in San Juan Bautista. The training consisted of a live demonstration, videos and discussion to teach bicycle safety to students. Lessons covered the benefits of bicycling, rules of the road, the importance and correct use of a bicycle helmet, safe routes to schools and other safe bike handling topics. Following the in‐class or assembly presentation, Ecology Action and COG conducted a bicycle safety obstacle course.
Ecology Action staff are League of American Bicyclist-trained safety instructors. Since 2003, E.A. has trained over 19,000 youth throughout Santa Cruz and Monterey counties.
The Youth Bike Safety Training was partially made possible through funding from the Council of San Benito County Governments. During the Youth Bike Safety Training, COG also sponsored a helmet fitting station, where students learned how to properly fit their helmet. Students riding their bicycles to the school without a helmet were provided one at no cost.
