Former Haybaler and true freshman Alisha Cornick has helped the University of Redlands volleyball team jump out to one of its best starts in recent years, having already racked up a team-high 279 assists in 30 sets as the Bulldogs’ starting setter.

Cornick, a 2010 graduate of San Benito High who led the Balers with 712 assists last season, is averaging 9.30 assists per set for Redlands, and has added 51 digs, five service aces, nine kills and 11 blocks through nine matches.

Redlands, which won the SCIAC championship last year, is currently 9-0 after defeating Chapman University 3-1 on Wednesday night. It is the best start under seventh-year head coach Mari Burningham, according to the San Bernardino Sun.

The Division III Bulldogs were unable to make the latest Top 25 coaches poll, however, although the team is receiving votes.

Chelsea Fowles/Emily Kortsen, Utah State Volleyball

Fowles, a 2006 grad of San Benito High, has already accumulated 381 assists in 38 sets for Utah State, which is a perfect 10-0 to start the 2010 season.

The senior setter also has 36 kills, 14 service aces and 81 digs to date, and was named all-tournament at the 2010 Montana Invitational last weekend after she hit .526 and averaged 8.64 assists per set.

Meanwhile, junior opposite Emily Kortsen, a 2008 grad of San Benito High, has compiled 23 kills and eight digs in 18 sets played this season for Utah State.

The Division I Aggies, at 10-0, have yet to crack the Top 25 coaches poll, however, although the team is receiving votes.

Wade Jacobson, Washington State Football

One week after losing the starting job at left guard, Washington State junior Wade Jacobson, a 2007 graduate of San Benito High and Gavilan College transfer, was back playing with the starters this week in practice, according to The Spokesman-Review of Spokane, Wash.

The publication said last week that Jacobson fell behind junior Andrew Roxas on the depth chart. Roxas was a part-time starter two years ago, but sat out last season with hepatitis. Roxas started for the Cougars last Saturday — a 23-22 victory over Montana State.

Jacobson, meanwhile, played in his first FBS game on Sept. 4 at Oklahoma State.

Erik Rodriguez, Cal State East Bay Cross Country

Rodriguez, a 2009 graduate of San Benito High, paced the Cal State East Bay cross country team at a pair of meets earlier this month.

Rodriguez recorded a 28:42 at the Cal State Stanislaus Invitational in Turlock on Sept. 11 to finish first on his team and 17th overall, while at the Notre Dame de Namur Invitational at Crystal Springs on Sept. 4, Rodriguez again finished with the top time on the team when he clocked a 23:20.

Rodriguez, a sophomore, finished ninth overall at Crystal Springs.

Cal State East Bay will compete again later this month when it will travel to Santa Barbara for the Westmont Invitational on Sept. 25.

Michael Murphy, North Dakota State Football

Murphy, a 2010 graduate of San Benito High, has played in both games for North Dakota State (1-1) this season as a true freshman.

Listed at long snapper, Murphy has recorded one solo tackle to date for the Bison, who defeated Division I Kansas 6-3 to open the season.

Brett Leonard, Univ. of Hawaii Football

As reported previously, former Baler and current University of Hawaii junior Brett Leonard, who was expected to be named the starting center for the Warriors football team this season, has sat out the first two games of the regular season with a knee injury.

The 2006 graduate of San Benito High suffered the knee injury during a late-August practice, and was expected to miss the first three games of the season.

Hawaii will play its third game of the season this Saturday at Colorado.

Courtney Allen, UNLV Cross Country

Allen, a 2009 graduate of San Benito High, recorded a 21:02.5 for the UNLV cross country team at the George Kyte Invitational in Flagstaff, Ariz., on Sept. 4.

The sophomore harrier was fourth on her team and 39th overall, while the Rebels placed fifth in the 5K event.
