Playing in her fourth year as the starting setter for the Utah State women’s volleyball team, former Baler Chelsea Fowles is closing in on the all-time assists record at the school and is expected to break the mark later this season.
The senior Fowles, a 2006 graduate of San Benito High, has accumulated 523 assists through 52 sets this season for the Aggies. Along with the 3,281 assists she compiled during her junior, sophomore and freshmen campaigns, Fowles has a total of 3,804 assists in her Utah State career.
After having started the season third all-time for Utah State, Fowles is now second on the list after she eclipsed Lori Sargent-McKnight (3,533 assists from 1996-99) earlier this season, and she stands just 138 assists from Carrie Steverson, who owns the all-time record of 3,942 assists between 1988-91.
Fowles has also jumped from ninth to fifth on the all-time list for service aces. Starting her senior season with 92, the former Baler has already racked up 21 aces for Utah State this season and currently sits with 103 in her career.
Fowles has also provided 49 kills and 114 digs this season for the Aggies, and was named all-tournament at the 2010 Montana Invitational earlier this year after she hit .526 and averaged 8.64 assists per set.
Meanwhile, Utah State junior opposite Emily Kortsen, a 2008 grad of San Benito High, has compiled 34 kills and eight digs in 23 sets played this season for the Aggies. Kortsen entered this season 10th on the all-time hitting percentage list with a .222 mark.
At 12-1, Utah State has yet to crack the Top 25 coaches poll, but the team is receiving votes.
