The Haybaler boys basketball team got everyone in the scorebook for the third game this season – that’s one fourth of the schedule.
San Benito (10-2) had no trouble dispatching James Lick on the road Saturday night in a lopsided 91-26 win over the team from east San Jose.
“It was a game that everyone could be a part of and contribute in,” said Baler coach David Kaplansky. “All their hard work in practice allows them to have the opportunity.”
Kaplansky was a little concerned his team would have the holiday blues coming into the game. But that was not the case.
“It is nice when everyone can contribute,” Kaplansky said. “It is always important that we go out and play hard in the first quarter, so we can get to the point where we are letting guys come in and out. We executed our offense and we were able to run through a lot of sets.”
The Balers kept the Comets in single figures in each quarter while scoring 20 or more in three of the four quarters even with the lesser-used guys getting some good playing time. Hitting 39 field goals always helps.
Kyle Sharp led all scorers even though he played just a little more than two quarters. Jason Sims once again had a good game at center with 14 points, rotating in and out for Anthony Butler, who had 10.
“Jason has been really coming along and is starting to generate more offense,” Kaplansky said. “He gives us good strength at the center position. Hopefully, we can use both Anthony and Jason’s strengths. It is a good combination.”
Eric Davis set the table for the Balers with a pair of three-pointers. Mike Moisa also had a three-pointer. Both players finished with nine points.
“We have played well overall,” Kaplansky said. “But we still need to improve. We need to improve our intensity as a team and (work on) our toughness.”
The Balers will play at Pacific Grove on Tuesday then against visiting St. Francis on Friday.
“It is going to be a great two weeks of basketball to get ready for the league schedule.” Kaplansky said. “The rest of the way will be very competitive.”
Against Pacific Grove, the Balers will have to find a way to stop 5-11 guard Troy Smith, who is is averaging 29.2 points in eight games. But in those games, the Breakers have just a .500 record.
“We are going to play him straight up and try to deny him the ball,” Kaplansky said. “We have to work on having team help if we get broken down.”
