Ten locals got a little post-Christmas surprise Thursday, when they were arrested during a holiday sweep led by the San Benito County Probation Department and state parole agents.
In addition for suspected parole and probation violations, people were also arrested for charges including suspected child abuse, reception of stolen property and illegal weapon possession.
Law enforcement agents confiscated guns, methamphetamine, marijuana and stolen property, according to a probation department statement. Agents called in the county’s child protective services agency after children were found to be in danger.
During sweeps, law enforcement agencies check on a number of locals to ensure that they are following the terms of their probation or parole, said Interim Chief Probation Officer Duane Tanner.
“This is the first one that I’ve been involved in as the county’s chief probation officer, but I would say (10 arrests) is probably standard,” Tanner said.
Probation departments usually perform regular sweeps, Tanner said. Although officers also check on individuals, a larger sweep can send a broader message, he said.
“It’s a good way of letting the whole community know that we are out there,” Tanner said.
He also said that sweeps allow different law enforcement agencies to work together. Thursday’s action involved the Hollister Police Department, the Gilroy Police Department, the San Benito County Sheriff’s Office and UNET, according to the probation department.
“When different agencies work together, I think, it makes more of an impact on the community,” Tanner said.
