Hollister – The conditions at San Juan Oaks Golf Club on Wednesday were not built for scorers with a strong wind making things difficult in Anzar’s non-league match against Salinas.

But the Cowboys’ No. 1 golfer Kenneth Munro was hardly affected, firing a two-under 34 to earn medalist honors. Salinas, which is tied for second in the Tri-County Athletic League, won the match 208-238.

“Salinas is a tough competitor and 208 is a good score in the wind,” Hawks coach Eric Lopez said.

Ira Ellison led a balanced effort by Anzar, shooting a 46. Tim Trefts and Travis Williams were both a stroke behind at 47 and Nick Tanouye and Eddie Gonzales both carded 49s.

“The 238, in the blustery wind, is a pretty good score for our team,” Lopez said.

Given the team’s youth, Trefts and Tanouye are both freshmen and Ellison, Williams, Gonzales and Tuesday’s medalist Erik Olson are all juniors.

“Nick (Tanouye) and Tim (Trefts) are young and I think they’re going to come on,” Lopez said. “I see them having some breakthrough stuff in the next couple of years. I see a good future for the team.”

Lopez is also happy with the progressed the team made, considering it started the year by shooting 258 in a match against San Benito at Ridgemark Golf and Country Club.

“We’ve made progress, we’re coming along,” Lopez said. “We’re getting confidence. That win (Tuesday) against North Salinas gave us some confidence.”

Anzar resumes Mission Trail Athletic League play at 3pm Tuesday in a league tournament at Spyglass Hill Golf Course in Pebble Beach.
