A head-on collision on Highway 152 just west of the Don Pacheco Y Wednesday morning sent three people to the hospital with minor injuries and shut down both directions of the highway for about an hour, according to police.
Lidia Munoz, 27, and Mario Lopez, 23, of Menlo Park were taken by Calstar helicopter to San Jose Regional Medical Center with complaints of pain in the head, neck and back after their black 1988 Honda Prelude collided with a 1992 Buick Regal driven by San Jose resident Beatriz Gonzalez, 22, around 10am, according to the California Highway Patrol.
Gonzalez also complained of head, neck and back pain and was taken by ambulance to Saint Louise Regional Hospital in Gilroy, according to CHP Sgt. Dave Hill.
Just after 10am, Munoz, who was traveling 50 to 55mph in the westbound lane of Highway 152, took her eyes off the road momentarily to adjust the radio and drifted into the eastbound lane, Hill said.
When she looked up and saw where she was, she veered to the right back into the westbound lane, according to police. However, she overcorrected and the car traveled back over the double yellow lines and began to rotate counter-clockwise, according to the CHP.
The passenger side of Munoz’s car collided with the left front-end of Gonzalez’s Buick. Due to the way the cars collided and because the three victim’s were wearing their seat belts, everyone involved was able to escape the accident without major injuries, he said. Both vehicles, however, sustained major damage and were towed.
CHP officers diverted traffic in both directions to Highway 156 and San Felipe Road, Hill said.
