The leader after the morning round, Brooks Koepka, is no stranger to the South Valley.
His girlfriend frequents the area to play herself and they have friends who live in the area.
After the first night — where he was tied for second at four under — Koepka and his girlfriend ate at Ladera in downtown Morgan Hill.
“I always love to come to visit,” Koepka said.
Koepka is a world traveler and is planning on going to China after the tournament is over.
He qualified for the Frys.com open thanks to his efforts on the Champions Tour that took him around the world.
Scores for the second day are trending lower from the day before. Koepka said the reason for that was the wind.
Today, he said the wind wasn’t much of a factor.
“There wasn’t much wind today. I felt like I was in between clubs a lot today,” Koepka said.
Following Singh
This afternoon, the crowds seem to have chosen their favorite.
When you find a large mob — who aren’t in the stands around 18 or milling about the concessions around hole 1 — you probably found Vijay Singh.
Singh is in striking distance of Koepka for the lead. He is four off the lead at 7 under through 14 (he started at the 10th hole). He is five under for the day without a bogey.
As he was coming off the tee box on 18, there was a sizable crowd coming down the hill with him.
He had extra marshals following him, who were shooing away people with phones out to keep them from taking photos.
Baby watch
Some say golf is a good walk wasted. Well not for one Morgan Hill woman who was expecting to have a baby any day now.
She and her mother came out in the morning to walk CordeValle to help speed things along.
Her sister works for CordeValle, so she and her mother got tickets to watch.
Mom-to-be is expecting her first child, a daughter.
