Damian D. Borrego

Damian D. Borrego, a life-long resident of Watsonville, died at his home Friday evening at the age of 89. Mr. Borrego, the son of Spanish immigrants, attended local schools and served as a First Sgt. in the U.S. Army during World War II. After the war, he worked as a plumber until his retirement in 1977.

He attended St. Patrick’s Church and was an active member of the Knights of Columbus. Borrego also belonged to the Foothill Firefighters and to the Plumbers Union. He generously gave more than 20 gallons of blood to the American Red Cross. He met regularly for many years at the coffee shop in East Lake Shopping Center each morning for coffee with a group of other retirees.

His wife, Dorothy, died in 1986. He is survived by a son, James Borrego of Watsonville; two daughters, Gloria Roberts of Roseburg, Ore. and Betty Chicourrat of Auburn; his twin, Julio Borrego, of Salinas; eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Joe and Domingo Borrego, and a sister, Ann Cook.

The rosary will be recited Tuesday at 7 p.m. at Mehl’s Colonial Chapel. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Wednesday at 10 a.m. at St. Patrick’s Church. Burial will follow at Valley Catholic Cemetery. Friends are welcome at Mehl’s on Tuesday from 5 until 9 p.m. The family suggests memorial contributions to a favorite charity.
