Delo’s Divots: Grab a baseball and pretend you are going to
throw it. The ball (if held properly) should be resting in the
fingers of your throwing hand and not jammed into the palm.
With the ball held this way, it springs and glides off your
fingertips and you even get a little power from your fingers.

With the ball held this way, it springs and glides off your fingertips and you even get a little power from your fingers. Throw a “palm” ball with it in the palm of your hand and you might as well call it a changeup — much slower velocity and harder on your shoulder.
But guess what? The golf grip is very similar. Grip the club in the palm of your hands and you don’t have the hinge and whip through the swing that you would have if the club is resting in the finger joints. I have seen players increase their club head speed by 20 mph just by making a grip change. This is not an easy or comfortable change, but it is a change that after a period of time will have you hitting the ball much farther and much higher.
So take a quick grip test. Grip the club the way you normally would. Open your hand and see where the club is resting. If it crosses the pads of your hands, it’s too high. Lower it down to the finger joints. You will be happy with the eventual results.
