Hollister resident Diego Ayala Avalos died Sunday, Feb. 15 at Hazel Hawkins Hospital. He was 21.
Originally from Mexicali, Baja, Calif., Avalos moved to the county 13 years ago. He was a member of Sacred Heart Church and worked at different large retail outlets.
Avalos was an amateur boxer and trained at the Bull Dog Program with Zeke Lopez. He was a champion in his division in the north, east and south parts of the nation. He had to retire from boxing because of his heart before he won the west title.
He was preceded in death by grandmother Maria Dolores Ayala, father Carlos Ayala Lagunas, sister Blanca Rodriguez and brother Lorenzo Rodriguez. Avalos is survived by mother Maria Ayala Avalos Sandoval of Hollister; daughter Destiny Ayala of Hollister; siblings Haddie Ayala Avalos of Morgan Hill, Daniel James Rodriguez and Joseph Rodriguez, both of Hollister; grandfather Carlos Ayala Lagunas of Mexico; grandmother Beatrice Sandoval of Hollister; and grandfather Pedro Avalos of Delano, Calif. He is also survived by many aunts, uncles and cousins.
Visitation will be held Thursday from 4 to 8 p.m. at Grunnagle Ament Nelson Funeral Home. Friends are invited to a rosary at 7 p.m., Thursday.
Family and friends will leave the mortuary Friday at 9:30 a.m. to go to Sacred Heart Church for Mass at 10 a.m. Interment will follow at the IOOF Cemetery.
