Hollister School District trustees are set to weigh a recommendation Tuesday to offer space for a charter school on the R.O. Hardin School campus.

Trustees will consider offering the space under a requirement to provide adequate facilities to an approved charter petitioner – the latest step in the process as leaders from Gilroy-based Navigator Schools push toward a fall 2013 opening in Hollister.

The Hollister district meeting is set for 6 p.m. Tuesday at the district office, 2690 Cienega Road.

In his report to trustees, Superintendent Gary McIntire pointed out that the district is required to offer facilities to Hollister Prep School by Feb. 1. The R.O. Hardin location falls in line with the applicant’s request for space at either that location or Calaveras School. Both of those sites are on Hollister’s west side, where there is a relatively high level of poverty.

McIntire noted that most of the charter school students are likely to come from that area of Hollister. He also said in the report there are an inadequate number of “teaching stations” at Calaveras to accommodate the charter school.

The district will charge a “facility use fee” to Navigator Schools for the Hollister Prep space. It is usually between $1.10 and $2 per square foot, or likely $10,000 to $15,000 per year, according to the report.
