Hollister – Local dog lovers will have the chance to get a good workout, and spend some quality time with their favorite four-legged friends this Saturday, as the local non-profit, Pet Friends, hosts its annual 5K Mutt Strut.
The race, which is held to raise money for the animal shelter that houses more than 50 cats and dogs, will begin at 8:30am, and Pet Friends Animal Care Giver Heather Tari said it’s quite a sight.
“It’s fun to watch everyone walking with their dogs,” she said. “We had this one woman last year who had three pit bulls and another dog tied around her waste that she was running with. She was just cruising right by everyone.”
Last year’s strut had more than 50 runners and dogs participate, and Tari said, along with the great exercise, participants can win medals and raffle prizes. The money raised for Pet Friends goes directly to the animals’ food, supplies and adoption fees, and community members still interested in registering for the race can sign up on location at Spring Grove School at 7am. For the $25 registration fee, runners will get a T-shirt and a bag of dog goodies.
“It’s always a surprise what we put in them, but they always have tennis balls, dog toys and bones,” Tari said.
This is Pet Friends’ biggest fund-raiser of the year, and Tari said, it’s also a great environment for community members to bring their dogs to socialize.
“This event is a lot of fun for the whole family, and it’s also a great way to socialize your dog,” she said. “Especially if you have a new puppy.”
