Hollister – An alcohol-related accident at San Benito Foods early Tuesday morning sent a Hollister resident to jail and his child to the hospital after the man crashed into a trailer truck and flipped his car, according to police.
Hollister police arrested Juan Juarez, 25, for felony driving under the influence and felony child endangerment after he crashed his 2003 Toyota Tacoma into a trailer pulling out of San Benito Foods at South and Sally streets around 1am Tuesday, according to police spokesman George Ramirez.
Although Juarez’s speed was unknown at press time, the force of the collision overturned the Tacoma and caused Juarez’s 4-year-old son, who was in the back seat, to bite through his tongue, according to Sgt. Ray Wood. It is unknown whether the boy was restrained in a seat belt or car seat.
After emergency personnel got him out of the car he began vomiting and was transported via helicopter to the hospital for a possible head injury, Wood said.
The driver of the trailer was uninjured, although the accident broke the rear wheels off the vehicle, Wood said.
Juarez’s wife was in the passenger seat of the vehicle and it is unknown whether she sustained injuries.
Juarez was determined to have a blood alcohol level of between .10 and .13 and was booked into the San Benito County jail on felony driving under the influence, causing bodily injury and cruelty to a child, and being an unlicensed driver, a misdemeanor, according to jail personnel.
He is in custody in lieu of
$100,340 bail.
