Anzar falls 10-1 against Harker
Anzar baseball coach Andrew Barragan looked at Wednesday’s road contest with Harker as a test for how much his team had improved since last season.

The Hawks entered the game unbeaten at 2-0-1, and the contest against a Division III opponent figured to be the toughest Anzar had played so far.

Unfortunately for the Hawks, some early mistakes proved costly as the Eagles took advantage in a 10-1 victory.

“They’re a Division III team and I thought this game was the perfect measuring stick to where we are and I was just very disappointed,” Barragan said. “We’ve improved a lot but our offense just wasn’t there.”

Assisted by five Anzar errors, Harker scored all 10 of its runs in the first two innings.

“We kind of shot ourselves in the foot,” Barragan said.

The offense got away from its game plan and struggled mightily to score runs, despite out-hitting the Eagles 7-6.

“We were doing a lot of first-pitch swinging and that’s just not us,” Barragan said. “We weren’t in sync today.”

The Hawks picked up their game after the first two innings, keeping Harker scoreless the rest of the way.

Senior Austin McKinney, making his first pitching appearance at the high school level, struck out the side in the fifth and allowed just a hit over his two scoreless frames.

“The one bright spot that I saw was that Austin McKinney,” Barragan said.

Anzar finally got on the scoreboard in the seventh. Scott Benson and Massimo Marra-Biggs led off with back-to-back singles. Sean McCain walked to load the bases and Adrian Monroy was hit by a pitch to drive in the lone run.

The Hawks return home at 3:30pm today to host Greenfield.
