It has been disturbing to watch the trend involving teenagers climbing on downtown Hollister buildings, and police must send a message that it’s completely unacceptable.

Business owners and their employees have noticed the activity getting popular in the past three months, probably tied to the popularity of parkour and other daredevil antics spreading with the Internet’s help. Parkour is an activity focused on overcoming obstacles through such motions as climbing, jumping and running.

Police and businesses should work together to stem the trend and prevent a tragedy before it occurs.

First and foremost, this isn’t a fantasy world. These teens may think they’re all little Peter Parkers, but the reality is they’re not super heroes or professional stuntmen. Eventually, the odds will catch up with them and someone will get seriously hurt or killed.

On a more basic level, this clearly is trespassing and disrespectful toward others’ properties. It is an important law to enforce for many reasons. If police do not enforce it and penalize these violators, then these bored teens will continue acting like hooligans and putting their lives at risk for no good reason.
