Thumbs Up: The third annual Hollister Professional Bull Riders event took place Saturday at Bolado Park and brought out thousands of locals who filled the grandstands. The impressive attendance once again for the PBR show – bringing out some of the best bull riders and bulls in the world – proves that San Benito County loves its rodeo action and can sustain a major event. We hope to see the PBR back in town next year for another fun-filled show.

Thumbs Down: Salinas Democratic Assemblywoman Anna Caballero has authored the latest in a series of water bonds, hers being $11.7 billion, in an attempt to solve the state’s massive infrastructural problems, including some with vast impacts on locals. Caballero is taking on a monumental task, but she’s doing it without real ideas and only generalized appropriations. She has left out the most crucial piece of the equation – those appropriation methods – including a timeline for the bond proposal, leaving such important matters instead for legislators to hash out before a possible statewide vote. In a state with a multitude of water problems, we need specific ideas, not political posturing. Without a set of definitive ideas at the outset, it’s hard to believe this California Legislature will find a resolution worth placing on a ballot where it almost surely would get rejected.

Thumbs Up: The San Benito County Deputy Sheriffs’ Association has been raising funds toward buying and equipping a second K-9 unit. These animals have proven to be invaluable in a multitude of situations such as entering dangerous buildings or chasing down fleeing criminals. They have received helpful support from the likes of the Gavilan Kennel Club – which has donated $1,500 of the $6,000 raised so far toward the $10,000 goal. With the county crunched for cash, the DSA deserves special credit for taking on the effort, which appears on track toward the goal. It’s a necessary tool not only for the safety of deputies, but also for citizens who might find themselves near a dangerous situation.
