Election 2016

With California going Hillary Clinton’s way, before her ultimate defeat Tuesday, local residents shared their views on the 2016 race.

Locally, Clinton gained 56.4 percent of the vote with just a few ballots left to count, while President-Elect Donald Trump gained 36.4 percent in San Benito County, according to results available Wednesday morning.

Both presidential candidates drew their fair shares of criticism over the course of the race. Clinton was bogged down by an FBI probe into her use of a private email server, while Trump faced criticism for lewd comments about women in an Access Hollywood video.

Resident Miguel Adame said that although he wasn’t a fan of either candidate, he voted for Clinton because he had issues with Trump’s stances.

Trump positioned himself as the “law and order” candidate and took strong stances on immigration and national security. Over the course of his campaign, he said he was going to build a wall along the southern border of the United States and that Mexico was going to pay for it.

Clinton championed raising the minimum wage and campaign finance reform. She drew comparisons to President Barack Obama, with some in the national arena claiming she would be his third term.

Resident Dee Connolly on Tuesday said she voted for Clinton because she’s the most qualified candidate.
