Voters get to decide the future
In the spirit of the recent Pride edition’s “Next” theme, it’s an appropriate time to start discussing how a majority of San Benito County voters have the opportunity less than two months from now to set the course for our future.
With three open seats on the San Benito County Board of Supervisors up for grabs this June, candidates undoubtedly will make their presence known widely by repeatedly asking you for a vote and telling us all how he or she would spur progress at a time when it’s badly needed.
They’ll look to capture your attention through newspaper ads, mailers and, of course, those campaign signs – big and small – which are guaranteed to at least tell voters that their brightest future leaders have names.
Candidates must offer substance
As candidates hit the gas pedal in the next few weeks, we urge voters to pay attention to the candidates’ knowledge of important issues so that our ultimate choices rely on substance rather than the futile rhetoric so often defining campaigns on all levels of government. At the same time, we urge and expect the seven candidates for seats in districts 1, 2 and 5 to court voters through positive, issue-oriented messages – and not mudslinging, name calling or rumor circulation.
This election is much too important for voters to get it wrong – and citizens of this fine county deserve no less than genuine, caring, forward-thinking leaders capable of seeing beyond the current state of economic stagnancy. We deserve office holders willing and visionary enough to paddle us through these rough waters and into an era that must be defined by progress.
In that vein, it’s crucial that voters get information that is unfiltered and meaningful – and, above all, that the candidates deliver their beliefs in a respectful tone so distractions don’t get in the way from finding the absolute right supervisor for each district.
We trust that voters will play their part by paying attention and ultimately making reasoned decisions – and also by looking down on any campaign tactics that stoop to anything less than fair and responsible.
