Election 2016

County officials are wrapping up their ballot-counting efforts three weeks after the General Election, with the final tally expected by Thursday.

The San Benito County Elections Office only has around 175 ballots left to process and count, according to Assistant County Clerk-Recorder-Registrar of Voters Angela Curro.

Although a final tally could be in as early as Wednesday evening, nothing will be officially certified until Thursday.

“This is the highest registration and turnout that I have seen in the county,” Curro said in an email to the Free Lance.

The elections office is anticipating 22,569 ballots cast for 2016 with 28,224 registered voters, bringing voter turnout to 79.96 percent. The number of ballots cast in 2012 was 19,249 with 26,600 registered voters, making voter turnout 72.4 percent that year. Total number of ballots cast in 2008 was 19,982 with 25,355 registered voters.

That means 2008 saw a voter turnout of 78.8 percent, slightly less than the 2016 figure if comparing presidential elections with newly elected presidents.

“This was a great turnout and we couldn’t be happier with all our volunteers to get this counted so quickly,” Curro said.
