Esther Crawford Wentworth, age 94, passed away on August 9, 2007. She was born in San Francisco in 1913 and moved to Gilroy as a young child.

Esther attended Gilroy schools and went on to receive her nurse’s training at St. Luke’s and St. Mary’s in San Francisco. She worked at Wheeler Hospital in Gilroy for 19 years, serving as a night nurse, a ward nurse, and a surgical nurse. She also worked in the offices of local doctors.

She attended Gavilan College to study Library Science, and then worked at the Gilroy Public Library for 22 years. After retiring from the library, Esther worked at the Gilroy Historical Museum for many years.

Not only was Esther one ofthe people who were instrumental in organizing the opening of the Senior Craft Store in 1979, but she also served as it’s assistant manager for a period of time. She was a member of the Senior Advisory Board, the Community Seniors, and was the treasurer for the Fil-Am Bingo. Esther volunteered for the County Election Board, the Red Cross Blood Bank, County Immunization Services, and the Gilroy Garlic Festival.

She enjoyed taking long walks, reading, crafts, gardening, caring for her cats and dogs, and spending time with her family.

Esther was preceded in death by her husband, Roger Wentworth. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Paul and Melinda Thoma; her grandchildren; Rick (Christy) Thoma, Matt (Sandi) Thoma, and Megan (London) Osborne as well as 5 great-grandchildren; Corey, Brittney, Brooke, Bailey, and Benjamin.

Graveside Services will be held at Gavilan Hills Memorial Park on Monday, August 20,2007 at 1 :30 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations to West Hills Community Church, Youth Camperships 16695 DeWitt Avenue, Morgan Hill, CA 95037 in her memory are preferred and appreciated.
