Former sheriff’s Sgt. Mike Rodrigues’ rape trial has been moved from June 1 to Aug. 24, while a judge this week continued several matters over the discovery portion of the case, said Art Cantu, the defendant’s attorney.
Rodrigues in December 2007 was indicted by a grand jury alleging three counts of forcible rape, two counts of unlawful sexual penetration and one count each of spousal rape, attempted rape and domestic violence. Authorities in September charged him with an additional rape count, along with felony charges for weapons and ammunition possession and misdemeanor violations of restraining orders.
Cantu’s trial had been set by Judge Harry Tobias for June 1 after it became clear Rodrigues had a conflict on the original date June 22. The attorney confirmed the judge has moved the trial again, this time to Aug. 24, giving prosecutors and the defense attorney more than two months of additional time to prepare.
Regarding the discovery being conducted by both sides, Cantu noted regarding the hearing Tuesday that he is seeking detailed information on the specialized training done by the investigators who oversaw the Rodrigues case.
