San Benito County – A firefighter with the California Department of Forestry that was injured during a house fire at Ridgemark on Friday suffered a serious ankle sprain and should be back to active duty within a couple weeks, according to a CDF investigator.

The firefighter, who works at the Bear Valley Station, was on top of the roof of a house in the 100 block of Donald Drive, attempting to put out the fire when it collapsed underneath him, according to firefighters.

Originally firefighters thought he had broken his ankle.

X-rays were taken at Hazel Hawkins Hospital and he was released the next day, according to CDF Investigator Cliff Williams.

The cause of the fire, which severely damaged the garage, a car in the garage and caused major smoke damage throughout the rest of the house is still undetermined, Williams said.

Williams said the investigation won’t be complete for about a week.
