San Benito loses 28-18 in season opener versus the Palo Alto
Vikings. San Benito outscored the defending Division I champs 12-0
in the second half.
If only the Balers could replay the first two minutes of Friday’s game against the defending Division I state champs, Palo Alto – or at least the opening kickoff and the first offensive play for Vikings – things could have been much, much different.

Instead the Balers fell 28-18 in Palo Alto to open the 2011 season. In the game the Balers trailed 28-6 at halftime before a dominating second half performance from the defense and quarterback Michael Bocksnick.

The junior quarterback was the offensive star for the Balers, accounting for two of San Benito’s three touchdowns.

Overall Bocksnick went 12-24 with 187 total yards through the air. Bocksnick also led the way on the ground with 143 yards and two touchdowns.

Running back Anthony Cervantes scored the third touchdown for the Balers and running back Nate Valencia caught five passes for 94 yards.

On defense the Balers shut down the speedy Vikings, after running back B.J. Boyd ran for 62 yards on the first offensive play of the game. Boyd lead off the game with a 90-plus yard kickoff return for a touchdown.

After the two quick scores, the Vikings took a 21-0 lead with 9:36 left in the second quarter. Afterward, the Balers outscored the Vikings 18-7.
