Spencer Gilford is Gavilan College’s next head football coach, Rams’ Athletic Director Ron Hannon announced late Monday afternoon.

“He’s a winner,” Hannon said in a statement on Monday. “He has set very high standards and has experience with programs being rebuilt.”

Gilford spent the previous two seasons as the defensive coordinator at Los Medanos College in Pittsburg, Calif., where he revamped the defensive unit. According to the school’s website, the Los Medanos defense reduced the oppositions’ yards per game by 55.8 yards, reduced the opponents’ points per game by 15.8 points, and doubled its sack total to 24 in Gilford’s first year.

According to the statement, Gilford spent Monday on the Gavilan campus spending time with the players.

“I let them know what expectations I have for them, that we’re here to get better on a daily basis,” said Gilford, adding that each player should expect to improve “in all aspects of life.”

“We’re here for them — not just athletically — but personally and academically,” he added. “We’re a medium for them to matriculate to a four-year school and be successful.”

Gilford replaces John Lango at head coach of the Rams. Lango spent 10 seasons at the helm of the Gavilan College football program, taking over the team in January 2001 and compiling a 35-75 overall record. He was relieved of his duties in December, after posting a 1-9 mark last season.

Prior to his two-year coordinator stint, Gilford served as linebackers coach at Los Medanos College, outside linebackers coach at San Mateo College, and as a defensive assistant and recruiting assistant at Stanford.

Gilford has also held coaching positions at St. Mary’s College, Diablo Valley College and at Fremont High School.

Meanwhile, Gilford earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Political Science at Cal Poly, and also earned his teaching credential and Masters Degree in Education while attending Chapman University.

The Rams struggled to a 1-9 record in 2010 and have had just seven wins over the past three seasons.
