SAN JUAN BAUTISTA
Perhaps as no surprise, football is king.
A recent student-interest survey taken among students at three schools in San Juan Bautista showed a high level of enthusiasm for a high school football program, said Mike Perez, who is on the Football Advisory Committee at Anzar High School.
The committee configured a three- to four-question survey last month, which gauged the interest of potential players and fans at San Juan School, Aromas School and Anzar High School, regarding football and other sports.
“We got the results and it was an overwhelming response of interest from all the schools,” said Perez, who is part of the student interest subcommittee and is also on the board of trustees for the Aromas – San Juan Unified School District.
“There was good interest in other sports, like cheerleading,” Perez added. “Even non-player interest was high. It sounds pretty promising. It’s just gonna depend on the money.”
With student interest high, the Football Advisory Committee voted unanimously to report back to the Aromas – San Juan Unified School District Board of Trustees for further direction.
“The board wanted to know if there was interest,” Perez said. “We need to get more direction to see what they want.”
In December, the Football Advisory Committee was established to evaluate football at Anzar High School, which currently offers girls volleyball and cross country during the fall months, the latter of which both boys and girls can compete.
The committee had its first meeting in February and created four goals, one of which was to survey student interest in football.
“And everybody was interested in all aspects of the program,” Perez said.
Other goals included establishing a football program by the 2011-12 school year, establishing a program that is cost-neutral to the district, and investigating specific requirements for a football program like equipment needs, coaches and Title IX.
The Anzar campus, meanwhile, already has an existing football field, including goal posts, after the San Benito Cardinals of American Youth Football and Cheer broke ground on the San Juan Bautista campus in April 2009 to create a home football field.
