SAN JOSE – San Jose State University baseball player Karson Klauer was named to the ESPN The Magazine/College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-District VIII Baseball Team late last week, according to a press release.

Teammate Scott Sobczak of Milbrae was also chosen.

Klauer, a junior infielder out of Hollister (San Benito HS, Class of 2006), and Sobczak, a senior right-handed starting pitcher, were each chosen to the 10-player First Team for the University Division, and now move on to the Academic All-America ballot.

San Jose State was the only school that had multiple honorees for District VIII, which consists of schools located in California, Hawaii, Arizona, Oregon, Utah and Washington. The University Division includes only those student-athletes from NCAA Division I programs. The only other Western Athletic Conference honoree was senior New Mexico State University outfielder Richard Stout, who made the District VI Second Team.

Klauer’s 3.88 GPA in business administration with a concentration in management, is the third-highest of the group.

This marks the second straight year that Klauer has earned this distinction, and adds to an already-impressive list of academic awards. He is a two-time Academic All-WAC honoree and two-time San Jose State University Scholar-Athlete. Klauer has posted the highest cumulative GPA of any Spartan male student-athlete for each of the past two academic years, at 3.896 and 3.861, respectively.

Athletically, Klauer has started 32 of 38 games played, including each of this past weekend’s critical conference contests at New Mexico State, when he went 7-for-19 (.368) with two doubles, two home runs, five runs scored and seven driven in while helping the Spartans to a 3-1 series victory that moved them atop the league standings with one week to go. For the season, he is hitting .256 (34-for-133) with 22 runs, eight doubles, four home runs and 27 RBI.
