Three former Hollister High softball players – Stephanie Azevedo, Cassie Davis and Stephanie Castro – had fine seasons for their respective college teams this past spring.
Davis (’02) and Azevedo (’02) were integral parts of Cuesta College’s Western State Conference title team. Cuesta is a Junior College located in San Luis Obispo. Davis, who played her first three seasons at Hollister, was the Cougars’ No. 1 pitcher, pitching in 35 of the Cougars’ 49 games, including a 1-2 record in the Cougs’ postseason. Davis was 13-14 on the year with a 1.40 ERA, averaging 6.5 strikeouts per game. She yielded 81 runs in 155 innings.
“Cassie always pitched against our toughest opponents,” said Cougars head coach Pete Schuler.
Azevedo, who played all four years at Hollister, hit .324 on the year, while playing second, short and third base. Azevedo was third on the team in runs scored with 24 and second on the team in steals with six. Azevedo was named to the All-WSC First Team.
The Cougars were 26-23 overall and 17-4 in the WSC, winning their second straight league title. They were eliminated by Bakersfield CC in the 2003 Southern California Regional playoffs.
Castro (’99) spent the past two seasons at Cal-State Hayward after two years at Shasta Junior College. She hit .263 for the Pioneers with 30 hits in 114 at bats. She started 33 of the Pioneers’ 35 games, scored 23 runs, which was third on the team and was first on the team in sac bunts with six. Castro, an infielder, had six doubles, tied for fourth on the team, and was second on the team in stolen bases with nine.
