Hollister – As coach Matt Olejnik expected, San Benito landed four top seeds for the Tri-County Athletic League wrestling championships today at Gilroy High.
Junior Davila (112 pounds), Luis Barocio (135), Fernando Lucatero (160) and Buddy Barraza (heavyweight) will all be favorites when the action begins at 10am.
Additionally, Tim Christensen (103), Geo Coelho (125), Jesus Sagereo (130), Sammy Ramirez (171), Manny Tovar (189) and Ryan Cowell (215) all earned second seeds.
“We’re where we need to be for the league tournament,” Olejnik said after Wednesday’s duel meet win over Salinas. “We have to do a lot of road work to get in shape. We can’t be tired at this time of the year.”
While the Haybalers are looking to land a few individual league champions and finish no worse than second behind powerhouse Gilroy, they are also looking to set themselves up for success at the Central Coast Section meet Feb. 23-24 in San Jose.
San Benito figures to challenge Los Gatos for second place in the section and hopes to have as many wrestles available as possible to earn the team points.
The top four in each weight class advance to CCS and Olejnik has set the goal high, wanted to advance somebody in all 14 classes.
