Former Lady ‘Balers Chelsea Fowles and Emily Kortsen continue to rake in the awards, even after they’ve left the comfy confines of San Benito High School.

Fowles and Kortsen, now members of the Utah State volleyball program, earned All-League honors for the Western Athletic Conference last week.

Fowles was named to the second team, and Kortsen was honored to the league’s all-freshman team. A total of five student-athletes from Utah State were honored by the WAC, the most for Utah State in its four years in the league and the most since it had five players earn all-Big West Conference honors following the 2001 season. In four years in the WAC, Utah State has now had 14 players earn various all-conference accolades.

Fowles, a sophomore setter, also earned second-team all-WAC honors after ranking third in the league with 9.60 assists per set. She also leads the team with a .329 hitting percentage. Fowles was named a preseason all-WAC selection this fall, and was the WAC’s Freshman of the Year in 2007.

Kortsen, a freshman opposite side hitter, becomes the third Aggie in as many years to be named to the WAC’s all-freshman team along with Melissa Larson in 2006 and Fowles in 2007. Kortsen is hitting .240 this season, which ranks third on the team, and is averaging 1.77 kills, 0.48 blocks and 0.23 digs per set.

Utah State, which entered last week’s WAC Tournament as the No. 4 seed, was upset by fifth-seeded San Jose State for the second year in a row, as the Spartans bested the Aggies in five games (16-25, 25-23, 25-16, 17-25, 15-8) in Honolulu, Hawaii.

Kortsen had eight kills in the match, nevertheless, while Fowles provided three kills in the first game, five total. Fowles also had 36 assists and eight digs against San Jose State.

Utah State finishes their season with an 11-17 record.
