Anzar got a big day Monday out of freshman Devon Parish to remain unbeaten on the year with an 8-3 win over North Valley Baptist.
Parish started on the mound and threw three solid innings to get the win and also went 3-for-4 at the plate with four RBIs and three runs scored.
“Today was a big pick-me-up by a freshman,” Hawks coach Andrew Barragan said.
The Bulldogs scored a run in the first to take their only lead, but Anzar (2-0-1) rebounded with four in the bottom of the first.
Austin McKinney reached on a two-out error before Parish doubled him home. Scott Benson followed with an RBI single, Massimo Marra-Biggs knocked him home with a double before Paola Marra-Biggs delivered an RBI single to make it 4-1.
North Valley Christian came back with three runs in the second, but the Hawks answered again.
Adrian Monroy led off the second with a walk, McKinney reached on another error and Parish blasted his second double of the game to score the two runs.
Parish, who finished with six strikeouts, threw a scoreless third and Benson pitched three scoreless innings before the game was called for darkness.
Parish and Benson both added RBI singles in the fourth to widen the gap.
“I shuffled the lineup around today and it worked out pretty good,” Barragan said. “I had Devon in the fourth spot and it paid off there.”
The first-year coach is happy with the progress he is seeing, especially as the hitters get more work.
“We’re hitting the cages and working on the keys,” Barragan said. “Pitchers know their routine now. They all understand what they need to do, so I can start concentrating on the hitting.”
