G. Marion Magladry died on March 4 at Whispering Pines. He was
born in San Leandro and was one day shy of turning 85.
G. Marion Magladry died on March 4 at Whispering Pines. He was born in San Leandro and was one day shy of turning 85.

He lived all of his life in Hollister, moving to the area as a small boy. He served in the Army Air Corps during WWII and was a member of VFW Post 9242 and the American Legion. He was a member of the United Methodist Church and he was a 50 year member of both Mound Lodge #166 IOOF and Fidelity Rebekah Lodge #29. He worked for Sterling Lumber and Hayward Lumber before taking ownership of McKinnon Lumber in 1972 where he retired and turned the business over to his nephew, John Barrett. He can trace his roots back to the 1860s when his maternal great grandfather was a blacksmith for Colonel Hollister. Also, Magladry Road in Hollister is named after his family.

He is preceded in death by his wife, Marilyn Magladry who died in 1987 and is survived by his nephew and his wife, John and Jean Barrett of Hollister; and nieces and nephews and their spouses, Marie and Mike Pera of Hollister, Charlotte Cabral of Hollister, Janis and Harry Yee of Sparks, Nev., Kenneth and Carol Blacklock of Santa Rosa, Rodney and Beth Blacklock of Alameda, Paul and Christine Blacklock of Twain Harte, Bruce Hurst of Fresno and Lon Hurst of Mountain View; his sister-in-law, Anna Jean Hurst of Hollister; his sister and her husband, Viola and Charles Blacklock of Alameda. He is also survived by his friend and companion, Elenora Hooton of Hollister and is preceded in death by his sister, Frances Barrett who died in 2002.

Friends can pay their respects on Wednesday, March 9 from noon until 8pm at Black Cooper Sander Funeral Home.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, March 10, 2005 at 10am at Black Cooper Sander Funeral Home. Officiating will be Mound Lodge #166 IOOF and Rev. Ardyss Golden of the United Methodist Church.

Interment and graveside services will follow the funeral at the IOOF Cemetery. VFW Post 9242 will provide military rites.

A reception will follow the services at the IOOF Lodge on Fourth Street in Hollister.

Donations are preferred to The IOOF Retirement Home in Saratoga or The IOOF Children’s home in Gilroy, or a favorite charity c/o Black Cooper Sander Funeral Home, 363 7th St. Hollister, CA 95023.
