Gaspar Marion died in Gilroy on Oct. 6, 2003. He was the husband of the late Vivian Marion.
Marion was born in Switzerland, 96 years ago.
Marion came to the San Francisco area in the early 1900s with his father. He worked in San Francisco in the restaurant business. He served in the U.S. Army during WW II. He came to Gilroy in 1935, during the Depression at the suggestion of Mr. Yobo Urjevich, whom he met on a fishing trip in Quincy, Calif., and has been a resident since.
He was hired by the late George Milias Sr. Urjevich managed the restaurant and Marion managed the bar at the Milias Hotel together for many years. He spent 55 years at the restaurant as a bartender. During his career at the Hotel, he met many famous people, including Bing Crosy, Betty Grable, Will Rogers, Joan Blondell and Herbert Hoover.
He was a horse player – it was his one passion. He was a member of the American Legion Post 217 in Gilroy.
Marion is survived by his stepsons Don Littlejohn of Gustine, Leonard Littlejohn of Tennessee, Mary McNeff of Michigan; his grandchildren, Donna, Debbie, Michelle and Shannon Littlejohn; Steve, Doug, Jan and Diane Littlejohn; Mary, Bill, Mark McNeff, and Susan, Brenda, Cynthia, Michael and David Espinoza and many great-grand and great-great-grandchildren.
Family and friends are invited to attend a graveside service, which will be held Saturday, Oct. 11, 2003, at 11 a.m. at St. Mary’s Cemetery.
The family would appreciate donations to help with the funeral expenses.
