Gavilan College basketball player Andrel Gaines, 19, remains on life support at San Francisco General Hospital Monday after he and his teammates were injured in a horrific car wreck on Nov. 6.

Gaines was on life support as of Saturday, according to Gavilan Athletic Director Ron Hannon, who said Monday he hasn’t heard of any changes to his condition since then. Gaines suffered several skull fractures, while driver Billy Heard, 22, suffered several broken bones, including a broken jaw. Heard’s condition as of Monday is unknown, but he was recovering at San Francisco General Hospital on Thursday.

Around 1:30 a.m. Nov. 6, Gaines, Heard, teammate Davontea Johnson, and friends Denise Bravo, 18 and Santa Cruz resident Razelyn Ambrocio were driving in a Cadillac CTS sedan from a club in San Francisco on southbound U.S. Highway 101 near Millbrae. Heard swerved to avoid a tire in the road, spun out and came to a rest, until a Nissan 300ZX driven by 43-year-old Dennis Leffew of San Jose, plowed into the Cadillac’s right side as it sat motionless in the fast lane, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Both drivers were arrested on suspicion of DUI, the CHP reported, but Bravo and another close friend say Heard didn’t touch a drop of alcohol that night.

More than $4,000 has been raised to help the Gaines family pay for any financial needs at wepay.com; along with wide-reaching Twitter support via the hashtag “#PrayForAndrel.”

The Gavilan men’s basketball team is planning to play in its home opener without Gaines, Heard and Johnson (who suffered a fractured leg) 7 p.m. Wednesday at Gavilan against Merced College. Unless Gaines’ condition changes, the team will play, Hannon said.
