Gavilan Rams

Ukiah—For the first time since coach Spencer Gilford took over the program, Gavilan is 2-0.
The Rams’ offense was explosive for the second week in a row and their defense was just as good. Gavilan downed Mendocino 64-22 on the road Saturday following another stellar performance from quarterback Drew Fryhoff.
Fryhoff had 18 completions on 26 attempts for 260 yards and three touchdowns. He connected with Jesse Baker, Armani Miller and Trevin Kelley for 14, 53 and 18-yard TD passes, respectively, which helped the Rams score 43 unanswered points.
The Rams defense brought their A-game, recovering two fumbles and grabbing a big pick 6 in the game. Pat McQueen intercepted Mavericg Yamaguchi’s pass early in the fourth quarter and ran it back 99 yards for the score, improving Gavilan’s lead to 50-14.
Dillion Babb accounted for 11 solo tackles and a sack in the game. The defense combined for 53 take downs against the Eagles.
Miguel Redmond, who led the Rams on the ground with 16 carries for 132 yards, reached the endzone twice. He drew first blood with a 13-yard run with 5:42 remaining in the first to put Gavilan ahead 7-0, and again on a 5-yard run to improve its lead to 21-6 in the second quarter.
Anthony Brooks broke free for a 48-yard touchdown on Gavilan’s second play from scrimmage midway through the second. He finished with eight carries for 82 yards on the day.
Gavilan would pick up two more rushing touchdowns in the game—a four-yard quarterbacker keeper into the endzone in the third and a 15-yard rush from Peter Fuccella for the Rams’ final score.
Gavilan amassed 571 total yards of offense to Mendocino’s 399.
The Eagles got on the board with a 20-yard carry from Ja’Korin Graves with 4:30 left in the first, but missed the extra point to trail 7-6. They were unable to score again until early in the third quarter when Daniel Itza connected with Kyle Olson for a 53-yard pass. Itza picked up the two-point conversion to cut Gavilan’s lead to 43-14.
The home team would find the endzone one last time when Yamaguchi found Keyshawn Henderson for a five-yard touchdown. Austin Queen picked up the two-point conversion for the Eagles’ final points.
Gavilan (2-0) will return home to play Yuba at 5 p.m. Sept. 2 at Gilroy High School. Results from Yuba’s game against Merced were not yet available.
