One might have thought it was Gavilan that had taken the hour-long drive south instead of the Bulldogs.
CSM finished the game with just five hits, but it was more than enough in a 13-1 Coast Conference cross-over win over the Rams.
“I don’t think we were ready to play,” Gavilan coach Nikki Dequin-Thompson said. “They’re a good team. Give them credit. They’re not physically intimidating. We just mentally were not there.”
The Bulldogs (26-11 overall, 15-3 conference) had only one hit and yet scored five first-inning runs. That’s because the Rams committed five of their season-worst nine errors in the first.
Chelsea Martin’s home run was the only hit in the second inning. And yet the score was 9-1 when Gavilan (10-24, 4-13) came to bat in the bottom of the inning.
What made the Rams’ performance more befuddling is that they were coming off a 17-2 win over Foothill College two days earlier.
“We’re on this roller coaster,” Dequin-Thompson said. “We have to find out how to be more on an even-keel.”
Michelle Tating and Nicole Gutterman combined to pitch a three-hitter for the Bulldogs. They combined for six strikeouts and no walks.
Gavilan scored its run in the first when Megan Smart singled, stole second, moved to third on a fielder’s choice and scored on a passed ball.
Other than that, Melissa Gaxiola was the only bright spot for the Rams. The freshman infielder, who missed one month with a knee injury, returned by going 2 for 2 at the plate.
“She was anxious to play and looked great,” Dequin-Thompson said. “We look forward to having her back at shortstop, which will make us stronger.”
Gavilan will take the next four days off from practice before returning to the field Tuesday, after which the team plays four games in three days starting with San Francisco City College at 3pm Wednesday.
“We have some teams we know we can beat,” the always optimistic Dequin-Thompson said. “We’ve been coming out strong against those type of teams. We need to come out strong against everyone. We can’t fear any opponents.”
