George L. Smith, a native of Beloit, Kan., and a resident of Hollister since 1995 passed away at St. Louise Regional Medical Center in Gilroy on October 27 at the age of 52 years.

George graduated from Augustana College in Rock Island, Ill. with a Bachelor of Science Degree in chemistry. George worked over 30 years as a analytical chemist. He began his career in Chicago, Ill., then came to California to work for Air Pollution Technology of San Diego for many years. After that he then worked for Waste Management Company of Fresno County for 14 years and Tri-Cal Soil Chemicals Corporation of San Benito Co. for the last 7 years. He was listed in the Who’s Who of Analytical Chemists and belonged to several Professional Societies.

“He was an advocate of the environment,” said Janell, his spouse. “He was devoted to the preservation of nature whether the cause was animals, plants, or the environment.”

“He was devoted to his family, his church and his job,” said Janell.

When he was able to devote time, he spent as much as was possible working in the Missionary Outreach Movement of his in-laws Church. He loved spending time with family and friends at family functions such as picnics and fishing with his son, Brian and (George’s) his fishing companion James Saldana.

He collected model cars as a hobby and also collected authentic replicas of actual automobiles. He was the son of the late Richard B. Smith. He is survived by his mother Ellene Smith of Colo.; his spouse Janell Smith of Hollister; his son Brian Lawrence Smith of Hollister; his mother-in-law Addie Jewell Thompson of Hollister; his sisters Sharon Adkins of Chicago and Vonda Hall of Colo.; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was the son-in-law of the late Charles A. Musgrove.

Visitation will be held at the chapel of the Grunnagle Ament Nelson Funeral Home 870 San Benito St. in Hollister on Monday from noon until 8pm, as well as on Tuesday from 9am until llam. Friends are invited to attend the funeral service on Tuesday at 1pm at the Abundant Life

Foursquare Church 790 Bolsa Road, Hollister. Interment will follow at Calvary Cemetery.
