Gertrude Mary Plaza died Wednesday, Nov. 12 at the Eisenhower Medical Center in Rancho Mirage, Calif. She was 84.

She was born in New Brunswick, N.J. and came to San Benito County in 1945.

She met and married her spouse while he was in the military. The living in Hollister from 1945 to 1949 then moved to Burbank, Calif. for the rest of her married life, which was 58 years.

She was an accountant for 30 years in the Burbank area until retiring. Upon retirement, she entered the teaching profession for a short time until she completely retired.

Her interests included traveling throughout the United States, Spain, Australia, Tahiti, New Zealand, Hawaii and Alaska with her husband. Her current and favorite hobby was video poker – playing at casinos she enjoyed going to. She was an excellent card player, especially poker, which she taught to her family.

She is survived by her husband John M. Plaza of Burbank; sister Irene Dunsmoor of Salem, Ore.; sister-in-law and brother-in-law Alice and Bill Elliott of Merced; and brothers-in-law Henry Plaza and Stephen Kennedy, both of Hollister. She is also survived by many other nieces and nephews and great nieces and great nephews.

She was preceded in death by her brother Ed Meyer.

Visitation will be held Sunday, Nov. 16 from noon to 5 p.m. at Grunnagle-Ament-Nelson Funeral Home. Family and friends will gather at the funeral home Monday, Nov. 17 at 9:30 a.m. to go to Sacred Heart Church for a Mass beginning at 10 a.m.

Entombment will follow at Calvary Mausoleum.

Donations may be made to the Heart Association in care of Grunnagle-Ament-Nelson Funeral Home.
