Thanks to a $1,800 donation from the Ridgemark Golf Course Ladies Club, the San Benito High girls’ golf team will be able to purchase new uniforms next year.
“We can also use it for travel, bags and balls, and even training aids,” said Ridgemark Assistant Pro Chris Branon, who also coaches the girls’ golf team. “There are so many athletic programs throughout the state without any money right now. This was a great donation for us and we’re really thankful.”
Although the girls’ golf season at the high school doesn’t start until late August, Branon is thrilled to already have the money available for his squad.
“When I came here, for a budget we had a goose egg,” Branon said. “Last year, equipment and uniforms cost us about $1,500, and about another $300 is needed for balls. This is a great start for us.”
Branon plans to generate more money for the program by holding a fundraising alumni tournament at the club, which he can then use to enter his players in tournaments throughout the year.
He points out that by giving his players the opportunity to practice and compete year-round that it will benefit the team when the season rolls around again.
“We’re thrilled to be able to provide the girls’ team with this money,” said Carol Reed, a former captain of the women’s club at Ridgemark, who was instrumental in her club’s fundraising efforts. “We’re real excited. We wanted to make sure that it all went to the girls. Hopefully, they have enough money to travel to other courses.”
The club had been raising money for the Baler girls from last April through October.
Club members first became interested in helping the Baler program as a result of their playing with the team during practices at Ridgemark on Saturdays.
“It’s a great feeling watching them play and seeing them beat the pants off us,” Reed said. “Now they have enough money to all look alike with the uniforms, and they’ll feel like a team rather than individual girls coming together.”
