So often we are quick to criticize our youth, especially at the
high school level, for bad behavior or errors in judgment.
Or we continually preach about the evils of the world and the
importance of growing up to be productive and responsible
citizens.
It’s true that our young people more than ever face a multitude
of minefields
– and one of them is the tragic and deadly results from drinking
and driving or driving under the influence of drugs.
But a group of students and their community supporters have
helped turn horror and sorrow into memory and tribute as they
raised more than $7,000 to honor the lives of P.J. Galvan and Matt
Lopez, who died in an automobile accident on Fairview Road in early
December.

Not only did the group of hard-working students raise the money, but it will go toward scholarships – one for golf, the other for baseball – as the two would have wanted.

The deaths of the San Benito High grads hit our community hard and we still hold their family and many friends in our hearts.

Let’s also take the time to stop and praise the wonderful efforts of those who put on the benefit ball and did all of the extra work to raise the scholarships money.

A special thanks should go to Associated Student Body President Becky Bonner and Amy Abbass, a senior and coordinator of the benefit drive.

We would also like to thank Papa Murphy’s and all of the other businesses and individuals who donated to the emotional cause.

Too often we are too negative toward our youth and what they are trying to accomplish amid so much trial and tribulation.

Thanks to all of those involved in raising more than $7,000, especially the SBHS students. The memories of two popular young men in our community will never die.
