Gladys Cullumber

San Juan Bautista native
San Juan Bautista native Gladys E. Cullumber died Friday, Feb. 7, 2003 at Hazel Hawkins Hospital after a brief period of failing health. She was 81.

Mrs. Cullumber was born in San Juan Canyon and lived all her life in San Benito County. She worked for many years on the San Juan Bautista Election Board and was a member of the Leslie L. Garratt VFW Post 6359 Auxiliary of San Juan Bautista and the San Juan Bautista Native Daughters of the Golden West.

An avid golfer, she was a former member of Salinas Golf and Country Club and was also a fan of the San Francisco Giants and 49ers. She enjoyed going to her cabin at Pine Mountain Lake and watching the pine trees sway.

She is survived by her husband, Joe Cullumber of San Juan Bautista; her children, Karen Jo Freels of San Juan Bautista and Denis Cullumber and his wife, Liz, of Laguna Beach; her sisters, Lily Johansen of San Martin and Helen Douthit of Stockton; four grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her sisters, Birdie Mercer and Maude Sonniksen, and her brothers, Joe Lazier, Wes Garratt, Russ Garratt and Leslie L. Garratt.

Graveside services will be held Wednesday, Feb. 12 at 11 a.m. at San Juan District Cemetery. The Rev. John Amelio of Glad Tidings Church will officiate. A reception will follow at the Leslie L. Garratt VFW Post.

Arrangements are under the direction of Grunnagle-Ament-Nelson Funeral Home.

Memorials are preferred to the Leslie L. Garratt VFW Post 6359 in San Juan Bautista.
