The San Benito High boys golf team shot one of its highest scores in the last three seasons on Wednesday when it compiled a 229 at Laguna Seca Golf Club in Monterey, and finished in fourth place at the fifth Tri-County Athletic League Tournament of the season.

San Benito’s score placed them behind Palma (181), Gilroy (219) and Everett Alvarez (220), and just three strokes ahead of fifth-place Salinas (232).

North Salinas (269) and Alisal (274) rounded out the seven teams in the TCAL.

“We talked about it on the way home, and for everyone, it was a lack of focus,” San Benito head coach Chris Branon said of the high score.

The Balers have not finished lower than second place in a TCAL Tournament during the last three seasons, taking runner-up to Palma in each TCAL meet.

On Wednesday, the Chieftains’ 181 was just 1-over par for the front nine at Laguna Seca. Palma’s Matt Pinizzotto medaled the round with a 3-under 33.

As for the Balers, Nathan Winn delivered a team-low 42, while both Dalton Destefanis and Will Cross carded matching 44s. Jade Kimura compiled a 49 on the front nine, and Taylor Weatherly rounded out the team with a 50.

“Just a lack of focus,” Branon added.

Baler Darren Hopkins, meanwhile, recorded a 51.

San Benito will need to rebound at its next and final TCAL Tournament, scheduled for April 22 at the Salinas Fairways Golf Course. The team will have plenty of practice beforehand, though, including Monday’s 18-hole meet, the Aptos Invitational at the Seascape Golf Club.

San Benito will be one of 16 teams present, a list that includes Aptos, Sacred Heart Prep, Los Gatos, Los Altos, Harbor, Serra, Mountain View, Burlingame, Santa Cruz, Valley Christian, Gilroy, Palma, Carmel and Saratoga.

The event will begin at 10 a.m., although San Benito won’t tee off until sometime between 11:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m.
