Despite a medalist finish by senior Emiley Palmquist, the San Benito girls golf team fell to 1-3 in the young season losing to Christopher High in Gilroy by six strokes on Tuesday.
“The girls played really well, but right now it’s the mental part of the game that is hurting us,” head coach Corryn Martin said. “Once we clean that up we will be fine.”
San Benito continues to get strong play from its top two players – both returning seniors – Palmquist and Lexi Branon. But the rest of the squad is filled with freshman and younger players.
“They are getting better every week,” Martin said. “It’s really encouraging to see. All the girls can improve.”
Against Christopher, Palmquist finished by carding a 40, good for first place. She was followed by Christopher’s Natalia Gutierrez who carded a 45. San Benito’s No. 2 Lexi Branon carded a 50 for the Balers.
Younger golfers Amy Carvahlo (67), Beverly Witty (65) and Bianca Jacquez (65) rounded out the Balers’ scoring.
San Benito returns to the greens Monday against Gilroy at San Juan Oaks Golf Club.
