The San Benito boys golf team has yet to win tournament this year – in three chances – but the Balers have steadily improved, head coach Regie Synegal said.

San Benito continued its good play Thursday, finishing four shots behind Carmel at the Quail Lodge Golf Club in Carmel. In the match, San Benito’s Ryan Han shot the days low at 36.

Aaron Smith carded a 40 and Brian Wall finished with a 42 for the Balers.

Carmel, though, squeaked by with a 206-202 victory over San Benito.

Early in the week, the Balers placed second for the second time in two chances in a Tri-County Athletic League event Tuesday at Pajaro Valley Golf Club. Both times San Benito finished a couple shots shy of winner Palma.

Andrew Colton carded a team-low score of 41. Tony Ramos finished with a 42 and Smith carded a 43. San Benito finished with a combined score of 215, 15 shots behind winner Palma.

On Monday, the Balers finished sixth – out of 22 teams – in Salinas’ tournament at the Salinas Golf and Country Club. Smith shot a team-low for San Benito with a score of 77.

The Balers opened the season with a second place finish at a TCAL tournament at the Springs Hills Golf Course in Watsonville. San Benito finished with 212, two shots behind Palma.

Smith carded a team-low 46 in the day.

San Benito will travel to Corral De Tierra Country Club in Salinas on Monday for the team’s third TCAL tournament.
